Is Galloway Beef Any Different?
The claim that Galloway beef is juicy, tender, and more flavourful is substantiated in recent USDA tests of Galloway crossbreds, when compared with eleven other breeds. Results of the tests showed that Galloway crosses placing at the top of the chart for flavour, juiciness and tenderness. A 2006 meat marbling study, published in the respected Journal of Animal Science, showed Galloways having more marbling flecks in both number and proportion of muscle than other trialled breeds including German Angus. Galloways also achieved these significant result with 6% less feed than the other breeds. These genetics combined with our holistic management of our herd and pastures guarantees that this will be the best beef you have ever eaten.

Is Grass Fed Beef Any Different?
In 2016 we had our beef tested at the University of Toronto's Department of Nutritional Sciences for its omega 3:6 fatty acid ratio. When the results came back our beef had a ratio of 2.5:1. We asked the lead scientist Dr. Richard Bazinet if that was a good number he responded "that's outstanding! Conventional grain fed beef is around 40:1!" When we asked him how our omega fatty acid numbers compared to other grass fed producers he replied "I see it like this. The conventional farmers are driving tractors. You pastured farmers are all racing in pick up trucks, wondering if the Chev or the Dodge is going to win. The big thing is that you are all destroying the tractor!"

I DON'T HAVE A Stand uP/Chest FREEZER! HOW MUCH DO THEY COST AND WHERE DO I GET ONE?
Cost and Sourcing:
- The cost of a new freezer will range from $200-$1000 depending on the size you need. Home Depot or Sears both carry reliable brands. Frigidaire is our favourite.
- Used freezers are typically 50% the cost of a comparable new freezer. They can be sourced on Kijiji, Facebook, or your local Habitat for Humanity: Re-Store. We do not recommend purchasing anything but a modern EnergyStar freezer!
Chest vs Stand Up:
- Chest freezers (horizontal) are more storage efficient because it is easier to stack things without the risk of everything toppling out. They also use less energy because cold air sinks and every time you open the door to grab your favourite cut of meat all the cold air doesn't pour out and end up on the floor.
- Stand Up freezer take up less floor space, and are easier to find things in.
Tips:
- Buy the biggest freezer you have space for. They are handier than you think and they fill up quick!
- Remember that a half of pork and a quarter of beef each take up approximately 5 cubic feet.
Is it expensive to run a freezer year round?
No! Given the high energy efficiency of modern freezers it costs between $2-5* per month to operate a 5-25 cubic feet deep freeze. For the price of a cup of coffee a month you can have an entire years worth of food at the ready!
